While your baby is in the hospital, many health care professionals provide care to your baby. You may see the following individuals and volunteers in the NICU:
- A clinical nurse specialist is an advanced practice nurse who supports families and other care providers. She works with the childbirth and NICU programs to ensure the best care for babies and families with complex needs.
- A clinical secretary answers the phone, lets you into the unit and is the main contact at the communication center.
- A dietitian reviews your baby’s nutritional needs while in hospital and at discharge.
- A pediatrician is a doctor with special training and expertise in caring for children from newborn to 18 years of age. A family physician/hospital core physician may also be involved in your baby’s care.
- A laboratory technician takes blood samples from your baby to help in diagnosis and treatment.
- A lactation consultant is a registered nurse who has specialized expertise in breastfeeding. They are available to help with breastfeeding as needed.
- A primary care nurse is assigned to your baby each shift. There will be a resource or charge nurse on duty each shift as well.
- A pharmacist oversees your baby’s medications. They are available most days to answer any questions you may have.
- A physiotherapist will see patients who need to be assessed for growth, development and mobility.
- A respiratory therapist will visit your baby if there are any concerns with breathing.
- A social worker is available to help you cope with stressful situations related to your baby’s hospital stay.
- Spiritual care providers can support you or your family when questions of hope, meaning, or beliefs come up during your time in the hospital. Infant and child development coordinators, family and children’s services workers, infection control staff, spiritual care services and other resources are available as needed and/or requested. If you’d like to request any of these services, please speak with NICU staff. You may also visit our spiritual care page for more information.
