Cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (CPET) involves pedaling on a stationary bicycle while we monitor the effects on your breathing, heart and muscles. You may manage only a few minutes of exercise while others manage longer.

We will analyze the concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide as well as monitor your EKG/ECG during this procedure. Along with the doctor, there will be a therapist in the room with you. This is a safe and pain-free test.

Why did my doctor order this test?

Some reasons for cardio-pulmonary exercise testing include:

  • evaluation of shortness of breath;
  • functional status determination in congestive heart failure;
  • pre-operative risk assessment;
  • disability determination;
  • often before starting a pulmonary rehabilitation program;
  • response to therapeutic interventions; and/or
  • the development of exercise prescriptions.
How should I prepare for this test?
  • Wear loose fitting clothing, no tight bras or a corset.
  • Bring soft sole shoes (e.g. running shoes), exercise shorts, track pants, or comfortable slacks.
  • If your test is scheduled in the morning, a light breakfast can be eaten. If your test is booked for the afternoon a light lunch can be eaten. Do not eat anything heavy for at least one hour prior to the test.
  • Please do not smoke or drink coffee, tea or eat chocolate the day of the test.
  • Refrain from exercise on the day of the test.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment so that you can be registered.
  • Please bring your health card.
  • Bring all current medications you are taking with you, including your puffers.
  • Be prepared to give a brief history of your health and symptoms.
  • If you do not speak English, bring a family member/support person with you who can interpret.
  • If you think you may have an infectious disease, please let the technologist know before testing.
Can I take my medications before the test?

Unless you have been told otherwise, please take your medication. This includes your puffers.

How long will the test take?

Be prepared to spend one to one and a half hours at our clinic.

When will I get the results?

The report will be interpreted by a respirologist on staff or by your own respirologist. A copy will then be sent to your family doctor, which takes approximately 10 days to two weeks.
