On this National Ginger Ale Day, Grand River Hospital celebrates this humble beverage that can provide comfort for patients with an upset stomach.
Jim Irvine is a purchaser in GRH’s nutrition and food services department. He says the hospital serves up an amazing 20,828 litres of ginger ale every year of regular and diet varieties. “That works out to 37,082 cans and 3,832 two-litre bottles every year,” he adds.
According to administrative dietitian Karen Gosine (herself a fan of Vernors Ginger Ale from Michigan), “It’s very common for ginger ale to be ordered for nausea and upset stomachs. Sometimes the benefit for patients can be from the ginger, and other times the carbonation can help.”
So today, we salute this carbonated drink that supports patients with upset stomachs throughout our hospital! It is the only soda we provide to people receiving care at GRH.
