Susan Udema was at home getting ready for a regular shopping trip, when her grandson noticed that something was very wrong. Susan was unable to walk and was having trouble speaking. Recognizing that she was experiencing a health emergency, her grandson quickly called 911 and an ambulance arrived to take Susan to the emergency department at GRH.

It was a great escape! GRH's Operating Room team recently transformed their spaces into escape rooms, as the OR and PACU teams worked together to beat the clock and complete a list of education puzzles in a new approach to educational simulations. Engaging all staff members, simulations like this one are safe spaces for staff to learn and review in a hands-on learning environment, enhancing patient safety while focusing on continuous quality improvement and patient-centered care. 

In preparation for a global shortage of personal protective equipment, GRH has begun reprocessing N95 masks and now has more than 1000 reprocessed masks available to support care if these resources become needed.  

An $8.5-million series of gifts from the Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis Family Foundation has benefitted local hospitals in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Grand River Hospital Foundation is honoured to announce a gift from Equitable Life of Canada for a total of $4.6 million. 

COVID-19 has brought many changes to local care environments, including the need to equip staff with the protective gear they need to be safe while providing care to patients. So when our pharmacy and cancer care teams saw an opportunity to make the hazardous drug process safer and save N95 masks, both teams rolled up their sleeves and got to work with a sense of urgency. The clock was ticking.

As our health care workers adjust to the new reality of COVID-19, staff and physicians at GRH are busy using scenario-based simulations to practice how to respond to the critical care events they are used to, with new protocols and gear designed to keep them safe. 

Grand River Hospital, in consultation with Region of Waterloo Public Health, has declared an outbreak of COVID-19 on one of its medicine units, 8A.
